Submit your artwork to be a part of the National Science Art Exhibit 2012!
In February 2012, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) will host its annual meeting and for the first time in decades, the meeting will be held here in Canada!  The event will draw thousands of leading scientists, engineers, educators and policy makers, as well as hundreds of science journalists, to Vancouver.
To share in the science, the public is invited to participate by attending “Family Science Days”.  During this free and festive engagement, science centres, universities, research labs and outreach specialists all put their best foot forward to inspire and educate the general public.  Students and their families will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with scientists and interact with hands-on exhibits about science.  With topics ranging from astronomy to zoology, it should be fun for all!
We would like to give you the chance to participate by sharing your “view” on science.  In this regard, the NRC-Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics and the Canadian Association of Science Centres, in partnership with Science.gc.ca, will be hosting an art exhibit alongside the outreach activities.  Our aim is for participants to create an image of what science means to them, so that we can display it during the exhibit.  As an example, consider students drawing pictures of galaxies or planets.  Anything goes --as long as it’s science!
AAAS and Family Science Days provides a perfect backdrop to highlight to the international community the creativity, passion and knowledge that Canadians have (while having a little fun along the way!)  Most importantly, this also provides a chance for Canadians to glimpse how their peers from across the nation envision science.

Check out the video above to see highlights of artwork submitted previous years. All artwork will be featured on the Science.gc.ca web site, as well as a Map of Canada to find out where the artwork comes from.
Instructions for Submission
Type of Art:
The art must convey something appropriate and scientific.  For teachers, anything drawn from your curriculum would be considered a perfect fit (and serve to reinforce learning)!
Who can participate?
Everyone and anyone!
Format:
Sketches, drawings or paintings.
Notes:
i) Artwork can be either hand or computer generated - we only ask that it be original and that it be limited to one per student.
ii) You are free to submit colour and/or black and white images.
iii) Pictures should not exceed 24” x 24” (60cm x 60cm).  Standard 8.5”x11” is fine and would be the smallest accepted format.
iv) In order to be included on the interactive map, please include the following information (on the back of each piece):
            -School name
            -Grade level
            -First name of the student (for privacy reasons please do not include last name)
            -A one sentence description of the image
v) All artwork should be original and submitted by mail, so it can be showcased at the exhibit. Please note that the artwork will not be returned.
vi) If you are unable to submit your artwork by mail or you live outside of Canada, you can submit your artwork electronically using the submission form.
Deadline:
Artwork must be received by Wednesday Feb 1^st, 2012.  We will make every effort to ensure all images are displayed and that each participating school is recognized. The earlier we receive your artwork, the better the odds of it being prominently displayed --so avoid the rush!
